Missed the customs check? What happens to your tax refund

Under the refund method, the customs check when you leave Japan is what makes your purchase tax-free. Skip it, check the goods in first or leave without them, and that receipt is not refunded; if you were already paid in town, the money is charged back to your card. Here is each case, from the Japan Tourism Agency’s traveller FAQ and the refund companies’ own rules, as of 5 November 2026.

How to avoid losing the refund

  1. Keep each receipt’s goods together

Customs checks per receipt. Pack everything from one receipt in your carry-on or in a bag you have not checked in yet, and do not use food or cosmetics before you leave.

  2. Go to the kiosk first

Kiosks stand in the international departure lobby before bag drop. At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu, Fukuoka, New Chitose and Naha you can also do the check on your phone through Visit Japan Web on the airport’s dedicated Wi-Fi.

  3. Green: check in. Red: go to the counter

Green means the check is done and you can check in your bags. Red means an officer will look at the goods; it does not mean you lose the refund.

  4. Make sure the refund company has your details

The refund is paid only after the customs check and your registration with the refund company are both complete. Register your passport and refund method before you leave if you can.

Goods confirmed by customs must leave Japan

If customs has confirmed goods as leaving Japan and you do not actually take them out, the consumption tax is collected and penalties can apply, the Japan Tourism Agency warns.

Questions

Can I do the customs check after I get home?
No. The check is made at the airport or port when you leave Japan, within 90 days of the purchase. Receipts without it are not refunded.
I forgot the kiosk and I am already past security. What now?
The kiosks and the online check are before bag drop and security. Ask airport or customs staff at once; once you have left Japan, the check can no longer be done.
Will my card be charged if I skip the check?
Only if you were paid in advance in town. Yodobashi’s city refund service, run with Global Blue, charges the advance refund to the registered card when the customs check is not completed. A normal refund is simply not paid.
Does a red result mean I lose the refund?
No. Red means a customs officer has to see the goods. Show them at the customs counter and the check is completed.
I opened and used one item. Can I still get the rest refunded?
Not for that receipt: if any item on a receipt is not leaving Japan, nothing on it is refunded. Other receipts are not affected. Tell the customs officer rather than using the kiosk.
