Tourist coupons: extra discounts on top of tax-free

Many Japanese chains give visitors an extra discount on top of tax-free shopping. Here are the official coupon pages, checked on 18 October 2026, and what changes with the new refund method.

How coupons work with the refund method

From 1 November 2026 you pay the price including tax and get the tax back after the customs check when you leave. A store coupon lowers the price you pay at the till, so the tax refunded later is worked out on the discounted price.

Show the coupon and your passport before you pay. Most stores cannot add a coupon after payment, and some, such as Don Quijote, do not accept screenshots or printouts, so open the coupon page in the shop.

Coupon terms may change on 1 November. Bic Camera, for example, says its current coupon is valid for purchases up to 31 October 2026 and that the next one will be posted on the same page. Check the official page on the day you shop.

Before you pay

  • Coupon first, then tax-free: show the coupon and your passport together, before payment.
  • The tax-free minimum still applies: ¥5,000 before tax at the same shop on the same day.
  • Apple products, game consoles, luxury watches and some alcohol are often excluded from coupons.
  • Ask how the shop pays the tax back and whether a fee is deducted.
  • Keep each receipt with its goods: the airport check works per receipt.

Getting online

You do not need mobile data for the customs check itself: the kiosks scan your passport, and the Visit Japan Web online check works in a dedicated Wi-Fi area at seven major airports.

Data is useful in shops, though: coupon pages must be opened live, and some shops ask you to register a refund method on your phone. Common options are an eSIM bought before you fly, a pocket Wi-Fi collected at the airport, or a prepaid SIM. NINJA WiFi also has a visitor coupon.
